The CERN SOLAR Club is giving new meaning to the phrase "fun in the sun" with their most recently developed contraption, the Solar Fountain. The Fountain was presented to the public just outside of Restaurant 1 on Wednesday October, 17th. The Fountain uses solar energy to run a water pump at is base which propels a golden plastic ball up into the air. As lovely as the fountain is, the funny thing about it is that the high of the water jet and the ball is an artistic method of measuring the amount of solar power being captured by the photovoltaique panel (without battery).

The day started cloudy, but as the afternoon wore on, the weather brightened and the fountain jumped to life. William van Sprolant, the Solar Fountain's inventor, had great fun with the fountain in front of a group of visiting children by swiveling the solar panel in multiple directions. "Everyone who installs solar panels worries so much about whether or not they are oriented at an appropriate angle to the Sun", sait William van Sprolant, "this is less critical as usually belived". To demonstrate this encouraging aspect, the photovoltaique panel of the Solar Fountain is precisely swivelling mounted on his base. "Everybody is invited to manipulate the panel and observing the réaction of the Solar Fountain"!

The solar club, while focused on the applications of solar energy is not limited to just this subject area. Many members of the club have interest in other forms of renewable energy like wind, tidal power, etc. They also build solar and other energy related installations (remember last Graviton articles about Horst Wachsmuch's 5 kW photovoltaique on the grid connected house installation and van Sprolant's  DOROTHEEoil skimmer for the Galapagos islands oil spill on 16 January 2001). Le CERN SOLAR Club donne une nouvelle signification à l'expression "fun in the sun " (!) avec leur plus récente réalisation, la fontaine solaire. Elle a été présentée au public à l'extérieur du restaurant 1 mercredi 17 octobre 2002. Elle utilise l'énergie solaire pour alimenter une pompe à eau à sa base qui propulse une boule en plastique dorée à la verticale. Aussi belle soit la fontaine, sa particularité est que la hauteur du jet d'eau et de la boule est aussi une méthode artistique de mesurer la quantité d'énergie solaire capturé par le panneau photovoltaique ( sans batterie ).
 

Les nuages ont débuté la journée, mais dans l'après-midi le temps s'est éclairé et a donné vie à la fontaine. William van Sprolant, l'inventeur de la fontaine solaire, a partagé son enthousiasme pour la fontaine à un groupe de jeunes (et moins jeunes!) en pivotant le panneau solaire dans toutes les directions. "Chacun qui installe des panneaux solaires s'efforce trop qu'ils soient orientés d'un angle approprié avec le soleil", sait William van Sprolant, "ceci est moins critique que ce qu'on croit d'habitude . Pour démontrer cet aspect encourageant, le panneau de photovoltaique de la fontaine peut aisément pivoter avec précision sur sa base: "tout le monde est invité à manoeuvrer le panneau et à observer la réaction de la fontaine solaire"
 

Le SOLAR Club, concentré sur les applications de l'énergie solaire n'est pas juste limité au domaine de l'électricité photovoltaïque. Beaucoup de membres du club ont l'intérêt pour d'autres formes d'énergie renouvelable comme le vent, l'énergie des vagues et bien d'autres... Ils installent (construisent mais aussi visitent) également tous types d'installations solaires et énergétiques (rappelez-vous par exemple dans un article de Graviton "l'écumoire à huile" de DOROTHEE de William van Sprolant pour les îles de Galapagos lors de l'accident du 16 janvier 2001). Si vous voulez en découvrir plus venez assister à une réunion du club. Elles se tiennent chaque premier mercredi du mois à 18 h.
