| Photons et «Photon»
L'énergie solaire fait de plus en plus parler d'elle. L'an dernier, on s'en souvient (CERN-Images août 1985, p. 2), une équipe de physiciens et d'ingénieurs cernois assistée d'enseignants de l'EMG (Ecole de mécanique de Genève) présentait une «automobile» solaire à la première compétition du genre (Romanshorn - Genève) où elle enregistrait un résultat fort honnête. Peu après, en octobre, un Club électrosolaire, présidé par Jean -David Pahud (SPS), était créé au sein de notre Association du personnel. But: promouvoir les techniques d'utilisation de l'énergie solaire en les appliquant, dans un premier temps, à un véhicule extrêmement léger et plus performant que l'on baptisa «Photon». Fin juin dernier, Photon participait à une première épreuve. Il s'agissait de relier en six étapes Fribourg-en-Brisgau (dans le Bade-Wurtemberg) à Suhr (canton d'Argovie) en passant par Bâle, Bienne, Berne, Interlaken et Lucerne et en franchissant deux cols, le Hauenstein (Jura) et le Brunig Quelques jours après, début juillet, deuxième épreuve: le Grand Prix de Meyrin, disputé sur huit heures réparties en quatre tranches. Résultat de Photon: quatrième sur près d'une vingtaine de partants. Pas mal du tout! Des projets relatifs à l'amélioration du véhicule sont à l'étude dans le club mais les finances, on l'imagine, ne sont pas facile à trouver..., comme le soleil. |

Photons for Photon
Use of solar energy is booming. Last year (see CERN Images August 1985, page 2), a team of CERN physicists and engineers aided by teachers from the Ecole de Mécanique de Genève entered a solar-powered automobile in the first race of its type, from Romanshorn to Geneva and did well. Shortly afterwards, in October, a Solar Power Club was founded with Jean-David Pahud (SPS) as its President and registered with the Staff Association. It aims to promote the applications of solar energy. As a first step an ultra lightweight and more powerful vehicle has been developed, christened 'Photon'. At the end of June Photon took part in its first race. The route over six stages started in Freiburg (Baden-Wurttemberg) and ended in Suhr (Aargau) via Basle, Bienne, Berne, Interlaken and Lucerne, and included two mountain passes: Hauenstein (Jura) and Brunig in central Switzerland. The result: eleventh ont of eighty. Not a bad start! A few days later, at the beginning of July, came another race: the Meyrin Grand Prix, eight hours in 4 stages. Photon finished a creditable fourth out of nearly twenty starters. The Club is working on further developments although finance is not always easy to find..., as sunshine. |
